Mac OS X Lion (10.7) removed the FTP preference setting. I wanted to update my local WordPress installation, where I do development. It’s so convenient to take updates directly, rather than through manual downloads via an FTP client. Fortunately, I found several valuable blog posts explaining how to do this.

Here’s how you can start the FTP server in Mac OS X Lion:
- Open a terminal window.
- Type in the following command:
sudo -s launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist
- To turn it off, type in the following command:
sudo -s launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist
